Day 3: Jeddah City Tour
We’ll start the tour once we’re here and visit Al-Balad, the historical downtown area of Jeddah that’s also known as the Old Town of Jeddah after it was founded in the 7th century. It is Saudi Arabia’s second largest city overlooking the Red Sea as it’s situated on the eastern shore. It was a port city and the financial hub of Jeddah at the time of its founding and for centuries to come, as pilgrims & travelers heading to Mecca and merchants often would stop here. Al-Balad literally means “Old Town” and it certainly lives up to the name as impressively ancient architecture, old streets, and narrow alleyways seem to transport you back to the past. Some of the buildings are over 500 years old and are part of the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s preservation project. The Old Town of Jeddah is also dotted with many landmarks of historical importance and our guide will take you through the hard-to-navigate streets to see them. The Nassif House Museum is a museum which was originally a lavish mansion owned by the Jeddah governor in the late 1800s, Omar Nasseef Efendi. The museum is also known as “The House with the Tree” because of the sole neem tree that was planted in the square on this land that was the only one in Jeddah until the 1920s. We’ll also visit the Baghdadi House, a house from old times that gives the street that aesthetic, before hitting the Old Gold Market of Gabel Street. The Gabel Street Souq, also known as Qabel Trail, is a shopping haven for bargain deals where you can get souvenirs to bring home, traditional spices, as well as perfumes. Don’t miss out on visiting this market for everything you want to bring home from Jeddah before we head to the next destination. The Ukash Mosque easily becomes the highlight of the day as second oldest mosque in Jeddah after Uthman bin Affan Mosque. Built in 1784 during the Ottoman rule, it was constructed by Turkish citizen who was born and raised in Jeddah, Ukash Abazah. It served as the sea gate as it was built near the port at one point in the past. The mosque has also been completely renovated six years ago with renewed facilities, revamped designs while staying true to Islamic architecture. It has a capacity is over 12,000 worshippers and the mosque also include a library. We’ll visit the famed floating mosque, Al-Rahmah Mosque. Established in 1985, this beautiful mosque built in Islamic style was constructed on the shores of Jeddah overlooking the Red Sea. The bright white mosque looks stunning during sunset as the high tide seems to make the mosque float on the sea. It’s become one of the iconic buildings in Jeddah. Finally, we’ll move to visit the New Jeddah Corniche on the Red Sea. It is a resort area right next to the sea with a recreational area of over 30 km wide. The New Corniche is an extension of the main Jeddah corniche near the city’s waterfront. It’s a favorite hangout spot for family with kids or youngsters looking for some fresh air at the sea. Play some more and take even more pictures here, before we leave to take you to your hotel in Jeddah for an overnight stay.
